One of the most powerful singer/songwriter from the South Tennessee, Susan Marshall began her music career as a classical singer before becoming a successful backup vocalist for the likes of Lenny Kravitz, the Afghan Whigs, Cat Power, and Lucinda Williams.
With this third solo offering, LITTLE RED, a mix of covers (four) and originals (five), she delivers her strongest album yet, soulful and fulfilling. Recorded during several trips between Memphis and London by Jeff Powell (Afghan Whigs, Primal Scream and Bob Dylan) and Henry Olson (Primal Scream, Beth Orton, and Nico), LITTLE RED showcases Susan Marshall’s warm textured and ethereal voice. Marshall shows that she is more than ready to sing at varying tempos on tunes such as the mellow Afghan Whigs cover “Going to Town” and her steamy original title track “Little Red” where she uses the Big Bad Wolf as a metaphor for a seducing man on the prowl. “Already Gone,” another Marshall original, is a straight up blues song in which the singer wears the pain and confusion of unrequited love on her sleeve. The chorus, “It feels like you’re already gone,” conjures the image of a woman who knows that her man just isn’t that into her.
Rock steps to the forefront on the duet cover of The Beatles classic “Don’t Let Me Down” with Lucinda Williams. Marshall’s vocals infuse the song with the longing and desire for fulfillment that John Lennon and Paul McCartney had in mind when they wrote the tune.
But the best rendition on LITTLE RED, would be this cover:”Femme Fatale” (Velvet Underground), incredibly hypnotic, that reminds me in some way Bird York’s “in The Deep“.
Put on the album and get ready for a truly amazing experience. You will not be disappointed.
