1- Hi Allie, how are you today?
I’m well, thank you. On a flight from San Francisco to JFK. There’s internet in the sky!
2- First of all, where do you come from?
New Jersey
3- What are you favorite dishes and drinks?
I love a good bowl of homemade lentil soup. NY bagels. A strong Americano, black with cinnamon on top. Old Fashioneds.
4- Do you have time to see movies? what’s your favorite one?
On this past tour (Ingrid Michaelson, Everybody Fall tour) we watched a lot of DVDs on the bus. I brought a documentary called Man on Wire, which was fascinating. I love going to the movies, but sadly I can’t remember the last one I saw in a theatre. Oh wait! It was Bruno. Uncomfortably funny.
5- We had chance to listen to your song “Corner” on “Brothers and Sisters”. Do you like TV shows as well? What are your favorites?
I was on stage when that aired! So I had to watch later online but it was still fun to hear my song in a scene. I don’t watch a ton of shows but I buy my favorites, 30 Rock and LOST, on itunes and watch them repeatedly.
6- Do you remember the first time you played in front of people? how was it?
I’ve been singing since I was a kid, with stage fright coming & going. A few months after I started playing guitar I was asked to fill a canceled slot at a local coffeehouse. It was too last-minute for me to get nervous about & it was a small crowd of mostly people I knew, so it went off without major disaster.
7-When did you start to write songs? What was the first?
I’d always loved writing melodies. I bought a guitar when I was 16. A friend taught me a few chords and I finally had something to put melodies to.
8- You’ve released an EP called “Passerby” and there’s a song I really like called “let it go”, what’s the story about it?
It’s about not letting fear rule you. And how sometimes it takes another person to believe that you can face your fears for you to believe it too.
9- How long did you play guitar? do you play other instruments?
I also write on piano and ukulele.
10- Do you have some artists that you feel related to or inspired by?
I’m lucky to know a lot of talented musicians. I’m inspired by my band mates & friends. They make me want to be a better writer, a better player. Over the Rhine is the band that inspired me to start writing.
11- Do you go sometimes to gigs, to see other artists? if it’s the case, what was the best you’ve been to?
Yes, I love live music and go to shows all the time when I am home. I saw Bjork a few years back and she was so amazing. Her voice was flawless live, she was sexy and captivating on stage & she had fireworks timed to some songs. It was a brilliant show.
12- I’ve just seen your performance on Good Morning America a few days ago, the three of you were so great! It seems you’re really close to Ingrid Michaelson, what is it to have such a friend? And how did you meet?
We met through our band mate Chris Kuffner. We’ve toured together for a few years now so we know each other well. I get to work with my best friends; I can’t complain!
13- Is there an album to be out soon ?
I’m going to be releasing a few digital singles soon, then in 2010 I’m touring more with Ingrid. But I plan to keep writing & recording.
14- I’ve got a special question: Does the seahorse on your T-shirts mean something?
Seahorses are magical. I just love them. The males give birth! And they “blush” in social situations.
15- What do you think about the music world these days? What’s better for an artist: to be totally independent or signed under majors?
I think it depends on the artists & their needs. There are a lot of degrees between major label deals & complete independence. It’s not all or nothing anymore.
There is so much music out there it can be overwhelming so I’m just focusing on making recordings I’m proud of & finding smart ways to get my music to people who might love it.
16- You’re on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and so on…Do you think it’s important for an artist to be connected to social networks?
I don’t know if it’s imperative but it’s definitely been a helpful & fun way for me to connect to fans. And recently I found a great artist called Madi Diaz through Twitter.
16- What are your plans for the end of this year and over?
We have Ingrid’s Holiday Hop in NYC in December, I have a few shows booked for myself in January, more Ingrid tours, more writing, more recording…
17- How did you feel touring Europe during november (especially Germany)?
It was great! I love the UK & Germany. I have friends in both countries now. And my mom & grandmother are from Germany so it’s great to see a bit more of their birth country each time we go back. The airline lost my luggage, which was a bummer, but at least I had my guitar!
18- We’re glad to promote you on CTNmusic.com like we did with Laura Jansen or Molly Jenson, you’re really talented and I think you deserve more spotlights! Would like to say something special to your readers & listeners in here?
Just a big THANK YOU!
