Familiar, functional well crafted folk songs, A CAVE, A CANOO, the third’s album from Portland singer/songwriter Shelley Short sound like a charm, a fragile, simple, minimalist and odd collection of experimental folk songs. The record is flush with juxtapositions: Short’s girly, Joanna-Newsom-sings-Patsy-Cline voice is set against a warm bed of accordion, pianos, plucked guitars and, most interestingly, the languid guitar textures of collaborator Alexis Gideon.
Produced by Shelley Short and Alexis Gideon and recorded at Liophant Studios by Gideon with some additional work by Adam Selzer at Type Foundry Studios, A CAVE, A CANOO was written and recorded over the period of a year, and its depth of sound reflects the wealth of time spent in its making. There was little to no pressure in its composition, allowing Short to focus her attention on the detail and nuance in each song.
“It was just really nice not to have a time limit,” she says. “Recording at home, I didn’t have the feeling of having to worry about paying by the hour, or when to go in, so it could be in the middle of the night. It added a lot of freedom, which I think was really helpful. I had an end in sight but I wasn’t trying to push it, so when it felt right, then I knew the songs were all finished.“
Short’s work with all of these friends, plus her colorful history and tales of growing up in Portland, As Short recounts: “It was like growing up in a time machine; in some ways we lived like it was 1896, chopping wood, growing our own food, wearing eclectic clothes in a Victorian home and singing our own songs. Other times it seemed like we were living in 1955, driving around Cadillacs and Hudsons and listening to Jonny Ray, Lester Young and The Flamingos. And yet it all felt like growing up in a movie made in 1963, full of these big personalities. As a kid I grew up so accustomed to falling asleep to the sound of talk and laughter that when I moved out, the silence got to me.”, All of these experiences had a great influence on Short’s creativity and especially on this seductive album.
