Caroline Herring: Golden Apples of the Sun

Caroline Herring

On her fourth album, Caroline Herring took a new approach; with her new producer David Goodrich, GOLDEN APPLES OF THE SUN was recorded in the Signature Sounds studio in Connecticut, so far from Austin’s music country influences, so far from her sublime 2008 album LANTANA.

This is maybe her most intimate and mature album to date, armed primarily with just her guitar and live vocals, without artifice, GOLDEN APPLES OF THE SUN combines haunting originals with some surprising new takes on old standards, Caroline Herring’s work has always been identified with the traditions of her native South but on this new effort she reinvents the folk songs who influenced her and pays a tribute to the iconic songstress Joni Mitchell bringing a new life to “Cactus Tree” while on another track, “The Great Unknown” inspired by The Divine Comedy, she sounds like early 1970s Joni Mitchell, poetic and mesmerizing.

The album includes also a half dozen reinterpretations as well as the traditional bluegrass tune “Long Black Veil” and the blues classic Big Bill Broonzy’s “See See Rider” or more surprising, Herring tackles 80’s pop icon Cyndi Lauper on her famous title “True Colors” giving a newfound strength and directness to the popular song.

Simple, elegant, poetic and lovely, sweet as its title, Caroline Herring has just definitely created another amazing album. As does the whole album, there are more facets to this gem each time around… you will be always on re demand!
