A delicious music discovery from our friend Karine, Halifax singer/songwriter Meaghan Smith’s major debut album The Cricket’s Orchestra on Sire Records, produced by producer Les Cooper, takes listeners back about sixty years ago delivering all the components of an authentic jazz number à la Sinatra mixed with an armful of blue-eyed soul ballads Ella Fitzgerald while some songs steps into the 1920s and 1930s evoking the graceful strides of Greta Garbo. It is an evidence that the Canadian singer effortlessly recreates a vintage jazz sound that hasn’t been squarely in the mainstream consciousness since Grammy Award-winning jazz singer Norah Jones’ 2002 Come Away With Me, but that’s not all: the album features 2-3 heartbreaking country/folk songs like “Drifted Apart” that evokes Alison Krauss & The Union Station and Melissa’s McClelland’s sweet voice.
“I wanted the album to be an inspiring musical experience that makes you feel like you’re leaving one world and entering another – a colorful, whimsical and imaginative place where you can reflect on your past and look forward to your future.” She admits, “I get depressed when I hear music that sounds like a machine made it.“
Originally from London, Ontario, Smith moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia where she penned her first EP The Crickets Quartet in April 2009 with the same producer Les Cooper. She is currently opening for Chantal Kreviazuk’s Plain Jane Tour and as she had already met Sarah McLachlan last year, there is a little chance we’ll see her on the LILITH FAIR 2010 before a Grammy nomination in the imminent future.
