Rose Melberg, Homemade Ship

Rose Melberg

Seems Rose Melberg has many lifes: two decades after entered the indie music scene with her first punk band, Tiger Trap, split after their second US tour, then founded the Go Sailor to finally quickly reteamed with Jen Sbragia to form the The Softies, the Vancouver based artist re-emerged in 2006 with a solo career with “Cast Away the Clouds“, a signal for the American woman for a new career direction to become an acoustic singer/songwriter, a gradual transformation, beginning with the Softies’ final album, “Holiday in Rhodes Island“.

Returning with K Records/Double Agent Label this fall for a second opus, HOMEMADE SHIP is a small masterpiece, an elegant and mystifyingly beautiful whisper-acoustic-pop. Melberg uses just a guitar and vocals on Homemade Ship (with occasional harmony vocal and piano work provided by Larissa Loyva of The Choir Practice and P:ano) offering helpful and insightfully delicate lyrics that puts her striking melodies on display.

Recorded in the winter in her adopted home of British Columbia, HOMEMADE SHIP feels like a wintry record, the songs float in the air like snows on a winter’s night – fascinating and delighting momentarily, then disappearing. Their barren, brittle innocence certainly isn’t for everyone, and Melberg, to her credit, seems undeterred by that possibility as she steadfastly sticks to her own artistic vision. With idiosyncratic lyrics like “You are a moon singer, and I am only a raccoon” (“Moon Singer”), and “Illuminate the places in my head where sharks gather” (“Sharks”), and tempos that rarely go beyond a lilt, Rose Melberg is clearly creating music for herself and a relatively few like-minded souls who will happily drift slowly away with her on this HOMEMADE SHIP.
