I had the pleasure to receive from Alan Pedder this benefit compilation album curated by Wears The Trousers Magazine: BEAUTIFUL STAR, THE SONGS OF ODETTA featuring a dozen of female voices and true talented artists, see: LINDA DRAPER, ANE BRUN, GEMMA RAY, ANAÏS MITCHELL, HAUNTED STEREO, MADAM, SANDY DILLON,ORA COGAN, JOSEPHINE ONIYAMA, PEPI GINSBERG, SOCIETY OF IMAGINARY FRIENDS, MARISSA NADLER, KELLI ALI, KATEY BROOKS, LIZ DURRETT, ARBOREA.
You may have discovered most on them whit us or on The Wears Trousers Magazine, this heartfelt, diverse tribute reimagines some of Odetta’s signature tunes, underlining how her wide-ranging and enduring influence transcends any perceived boundaries of age, race or genre.
For the youngers of us, Odetta was an important figure in the American folk music, actress, guitarist, songwriter, she was also known for her a human rights activism, often referred to as “The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement“. Her musical repertoire consisted largely of American folk music, blues, jazz, and spirituals. She was influential musically and ideologically to many of the key figures of the folk-revival of that time, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, and Janis Joplin, by this definition, she IS the grand mother of all the female artists today, from Sarah McLachlan, to Duffy or Diane Birch and of so many artists you can listen and discover each day on CTNMUSIC.COM
Odetta died on December 2, 2008 but she left us some 25 albums over her impressive career. A vast catalogue of songs, some of them become the familiar classics you may heard one day in your life; these songs, not all, but 16 of them are in this beautiful album, with exclusive new tracks from artists like Ane Brun, Marissa Nadler and Liz Durrett and newcomers like Haunted Stereo and Katey Brooks.
What these 16 tracks share above all else is a love for the material and a profound respect for the woman who did much to popularise it.
When Alan Pedder contacted me, I admit I was really surprise that he did it, it’s a honor, really! First established as an online magazine in 2005 and now in print, Wears The Trousers has grown into a respected voice for women in the music industry. After hinting at the project for months, Alan Pedder and Charlotte Richardson Andrews did a remarkable and an incredible work: all profits from sales of the album will be split evenly between two charities chosen by
Wears The Trousers in recognition of their work on behalf of women, The Fawcett Society and The Women’s Resource.
Make sure you show your support and buy a copy. BEAUTIFUL STAR, THE SONGS OF ODETTA is available through Wears The Trousers.
May Alan Pedder will forgive me, I didn’t ask him the authorization but I put 3 tracks for listening:
