Just let me make a remark about French people: I’ve always found them bizarre about their music tastes, folk genre has never been their cup of tea but sometimes, there is one or two artists who can change their opinion about this genre: Emily Jane White is one of those artists, who gained a relative success with her first album DARK UNDERCOAT last year (the album was released 2 years before and was revealed on French TV).
This time, the San Francisco songwriter’s sophomore album VICTORIAN AMERICA hits the stores in Europe first despite it was largely written and recorded in San Francisco and Oakland, a 3 years work.
If Dark Undercoat claimed a folk noir, intimist, VICTORIAN AMERICA fills in the blank lines from Dark Undercoat with rich color, lust arrangements, dynamics, orchestrations and a richer sense of poetics, still melancholic, still haunted by her demons but more mature, we would say.
“I pushed myself a little bit further in terms of songwriting”, White notes, “and the arrangements were more of a collaboration between everyone involved in the band. Fortunately this group of people allowed for a lot of experimentation. It was an incredibly organic and enjoyable process.”
Lyrically, White’s themes act like a devil on both shoulders who long ago killed off the angel. “There’s a lot of references in the record to political issues, death and dying”, she explains, “there’s not a lot of literal narrative. I strive to create scenes in my writing that allow for abstract rather than literal interpretation”.
Dark Undercoat, was a masterpiece, VICTORIAN AMERICA is just magic, from beginning to end, this is new mystic American songwriting at it finest and maybe french people’s music taste is not so awful as I thought…
