Haunting and melancholy but pleasant to listen to, the self titled debut album from Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden could not let you indifferent. Raised from the great state of Ohio, Kate Tucker is backed by a dynamic ensemble of Seattle artists including Blake Wescott, Casey Foubert, Ty Bailie, and Ed O’Brien, named as “The Sons of Sweden”.
Based in Ballard and formed in 2006, their self-titled debut was produced by Ryan Hadlock (Blonde Redhead, Metric, The Gossip) at Bear Creek Studio and featured Nic Danielson of The Kindness Kind and Seattle folk luminary Damien Jurado.
Putting these musicians and artists all together, the result could not be more improbable but you get in the end a marvelous and emotional album full of heartfelt songs that reflects both Seattle’s pop tunes and the alt-country/haunting Southern Gothic from the great scape of Ohio. The blend and arrangement of the instruments together made for very unique and individualistic songs.
Kate Tucker has been compared to the likes of such greats as Mazzy Star, Beth Orton, Neko Case, Cat Power with a pinch of Sarah McLachlan and Karin Bergquist (Over The Rhine): soft and young, fragile and innocent, Kate Tucker sings stories of loves, lost hours, inevitable ends, and broken towers.
Undeniably, this is an enchanting album and is a good confident start for Kate Tucker, offering a promising future: in 2009, Kate Tucker parted with the Sons of Sweden. Now back in Seattle, she is recording a new album produced by Blake Wescott to be released in 2010.
Kate has also has a side project called honeydove. Look for new songs at myspace.com/katetuckermusic
