To be honest I had never really listen to any Hope Sandoval or Mazzy Star’s albums till today, even if she is and still is the artist legend and the reference icon to many artists: she has define the sound and style of California psychedelic dream pop in the 90’s. Sure, her discography is not very prolific: to date, Mazzy Star has released 3 albums: She Hangs Brightly (1990), So Tonight That I Might See (1993), and Among My Swan (1996) before she gone solo in 2001 with Bavarian Fruit Bread but like diamonds are rare, Hope Sandoval is a unique and precious gem on music industry… and this is only her second full-length solo album: THOUGH THE DEVIL SOFTLY, released on September 29, on famous Canadian record label, Nettwerk.
Again having not heard anything from her teamed with her band The Warm Inventions, I really had no idea what to expect and honestly it was really a discovery, I mean the good kind which you can blame yourself for missing for years a so amazing and captivating sound and ethereal voice. When listen the album, it’s like coming back to the 1960-1970s, like listening to Billie Hollyday or The Doors and Jim Morrison’s ghost taking a road trip into the darkness of Hope Sandoval’s mind. Each song rides a gentle swell of languorous guitars and shimmery rhythms and Hope Sandoval’s velvet-voiced gothic country laments is such irresistible of sensuality, hypnotic, delicate, sultry, just as well: do I need to recommend you this album, this is just a psychedelia fused with folk and trip hop-an experimental masterpiece, beautiful, ageless stuff, clearly the best production I’ve ever heard, better than the actual siren-like and wannabees.
