Sass Jordan, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn

Sass Jordan

After a successful last decade at the top of the charts, Juno Award-winning Montrealer Sass Jordan is back with her 6th studio album FROM DUSK ‘TIL DAWN on Elvair Entertainment due out this September 15, 2009.

Sass Jordan as an internationally recognized and accomplished singer/songwriter has sold over one million CDs worldwide during 30 years and has worked with many music heavyweights, including Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Carlos Santana and Joe Cocker. In 1992, Jordan performed a duet with Joe Cocker for the soundtrack of the motion picture The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, which sold more than 27 million copies worldwide. In 2003, she took on judging duties on the TV ratings blockbuster, Canadian Idol – the same year she shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and others as part of the history-making SARS relief concert in Toronto.

Written and recorded from July through October 2008, and features songs and sounds that reflect the atmosphere of the late 70’s Southern California scene, the new album features also Sass Jordan’s husband, Derek Sharp on guitar and multiple instruments and who also produced it. Joining Sass Jordan on the CD too, Peter Cardinali on bass guitar, Jorn Anderson on drums and percussion, Gary Breit on keyboards, Michael Borkosky on guitars and co-arrangements, and lastly, Chris Caddell on guitar. “I started out singing in Westmount Park, with my friends and a couple of acoustic guitars … passersby would stop and listen for a while, as we honed our skills in public“, says Jordan. “Naturally, this type of vocal harmony and melodic sensibility is now a staple in my repertoire, and one I had a blast revisiting on this current recording”.

The CD starts with the song ‘What I Need” that reminds me Melissa Etheridge’s “Like The Way I Do“, in fact They both have a similar texture and raspy voice. Thought, writing everyday about some young fresh female tender voice doesn’t mean that I don’t like some mature voice too :)

The second track “Fell in Love Again” sounds like more of her earlier work with less rock and more horns attached to it. It works very well here. The soothing track “Love N Affection” has a jazz-type vocal with a hint of drums and with tempered acoustic guitars. Sass shows more of her range toward the end of the song, layered with an electric guitar. The slide guitar is brought out for the Tom Waits cover “OL’ 55.” my favorite title on this album :) but there’s another one too : the track “Stronger”, probably the best song that really showcases what Sass can do as a vocalist on this CD. She sings, but also adds her raspy vocals to sections along with raising her voice when needed.

The entire album feels like Sass is getting together with some friends and jamming on tunes and seeing what comes out of it. It’s not as bluesy as her last release “Get what You Give” and not rocking like “Racine’ or “Rats.“ About the album, Sass Jordan says : “The songs of the CD come from me wanting to write about that time of day when things are most uncertain, in a state of potentiality, right before the night manifests, with all it’s accompanying fear, passion, quiet, loneliness, dread, and dreams…. It’s the time we seem to be the most vulnerable emotionally, and as an artist, that time is very interesting to explore.

Well, in definitive, Sass Jordan is what is Sass Jordan: A girl who rocks! Album recommended!
