They took their name from a latin word, but should we call this bright and luminous Glasgowegian sextet: Camera Illuminata… indeed MY MAUDLIN CAREER, is their most enchanting album since 1996. 3 years have passed since the release of their last long player LET’S GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY, this fourth record, in a career that spans over a decade, is their most bittersweet record to date in that while there is a definite upbeat quality about many of the songs from a musical angle, lyrically lead vocal Tracyanne Campbell seems to be at her most poignant.
After the commercial success of LET’S GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY in 2006, Camera Obscura returned to Sweden to work once more with producer Jari Haapalainen. “My Maudlin Career” showcases Jari’s wonderful understanding with the band. Songs such as “French Navy”, “Honey In The Sun”, “Swans” and “Away With Murder” typify another strong body of work that’s sure to delight, ensuring the band to continue their upward trajectory. This new record was also marked by a new deal with legendary Brit-indie label 4AD (home of Pixies, Throwing Muses, Cocteau Twins).
Make no mistake, once again, this is a remarkably beautiful record, MY MAUDLIN CAREER is the kind of record that exists to reward those both mad, and sad, in love. From the title track’s self-effacing lament that ‘My maudlin career must come to an end/I don’t want to be sad again’ to the various reference points to an ex-lover, mostly culminating in lines such as ‘He said we can still be friends’ on the charmingly disconsolate ‘James’ to ‘Careless Love’ and its erroneous refrain of ‘I don’t think I should see you again.’ there is a resonant air of melancholy. But this is not this kind of melancholy that makes you sad and regret. It just makes you feel love, the songs are will make you feels at home. Just quiet and charming.
If you like Belle & Sebastian, the Essex Green, or the Concretes you’ll be pleased!
