Usatoday.com about Sarah Jarosz : “The talents of bluegrass singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Jarosz would be astonishing even if she hadn’t just turned 18.” Indeed, about to graduate from high school, seventeen-year-old Texas native Sarah Jarosz emerged on the scene about five years ago as someone to watch. Her Sugar Hill debut SONG UP IN HER HEAD is just remarkable, joining a long line of teen talents to grow up in the contemporary bluegrass scene like Sierra Hull….
Jamming onstage with bluegrass icons David Grisman and Ricky Skaggs, she played her mandolin with a sure touch and real joy. It looked and sounded comfortable in her then twelve-year-old hands.
She started writing songs on the guitar and took up the banjo. While her instrumental talents are formidable, let’s make one thing clear: Sarah is that rare singer. With subtle use of colors and effects, she inhabits her songs the way a fine actress does her role. Her voice is velvety smooth, agile, and powerful, occasionally reminiscent of such disparate artists as Natalie Maines and Patty Griffin.
Many artists appear on this debut album : Abigail Washburn, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Tim O’Brien, Mike Marshall, Ben Sollee, Chris Thile and Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers), and numerous others. Because of these so many collaborators, it’s hard to ignore that Sarah Jarosz has the attention of the entire contemporary bluegrass world. It’s also hard to contest the judgment of this array of artists, as it’s unimaginable that any number of them would participate on this disc if they didn’t believe in Jarosz’s innate musical prowess.
There is no doubt that this first effort is just a beginning in a long career. Just take a listening and make your opinion.
