New Yorker Susan Tedeschi is Back To The River, on her second recording for Verve Forecast. In the years since she captured the public’s musical imagination with her 1998 breakthrough album Just Won’t Burn, the multi-talented musician has established a formidable reputation as a deeply expressive singer, a prodigiously talented guitarist and distinctive songwriter. She’s won a large and loyal audience for her ability to craft elements of classic blues, rock, R&B, folk and gospel into a distinctly individual style that honors rootsy musical traditions without being subservient to them.
On Back To The River, her fifth album, Susan writes, sings and plays on a hard-driving collection of new songs that offer an emotionally honest look at love and life. Produced by George Drakoulias (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Black Crowes, Jayhawks), Susan journeyed to Nashville to work with legendary swamp–rock godfather Tony Joe White, with whom she co–wrote the album’s raucous title track, the album also features performances by Susan’s husband Derek Trucks (who also produced 1 track), Gary Louris and Doyle Bramhall II. Tedeschi’s Verve Forecast debut, Hope and Desire, focused on her amazing vocal talents as an interpreter of other’s songs. This time out she turns her pen, guitar and powerful voice to her own work having written or co-written all but one song proving her all maturity and how she has grown in the decade since she burst onto the scene. Back To The River, although not identical to “Just Won’t Burn”, is a hard rocking set that will please fans of the earlier set. It is a bit less bluesy set than the earlier set.
“These songs,” she says, “are about real life issues that have been on my mind. I don’t think it’s my job to impose my opinion on people, but I do feel it’s my responsibility to write songs that reflect the times and how I feel about them. Becoming a parent makes you start to think on a different scale, and it made me realize that you can write more than love songs. Even if a song can’t change the world, you can still capture a little tiny bit of truth and deliver it to people.”
Now, with Back to the River, Susan Tedeschi takes a major musical leap forward. “I worked really hard on this one,” she states. “I’ve enjoyed writing with so many different songwriters and loved working together with musicians to get across my ideas and visions.” “I’m really excited about this record, and I’m anxious to have people hear it,” Tedeschi concludes. “People have been waiting for new music from me for awhile, so I look forward to touring, to bring these songs to as many people as I can.”
