Jenny Lewis : Acid Tongue

In the vein of Rilo Kiley’s Under the Blacklight; Actress and songstress Jenny Lewis continues to shed her innocent pop sound for a seductive, smoldering mix of cutting reflection with a hint of hopeful abandon. She has never sounded so passionate and her songs never so hard-hitting and acerbic as on her aptly titled solo disk, Acid Tongue featuring collaborations with the She & Him band (actress Zoeey Deschanel and Matt Ward) and guest appearances by Elvis Costello and Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes. Lewis’s lyrics seam to pick up where previous release Rabbit Fur Coat left off and smack of autobiographical. Soulful nuanced tracks like ‘Acid Tongue’ reflect the more sobering moments of Rilo Kiley’s past albums like The Execution of All Things. These moments are often juxtaposed with more the more rockabilly inspired moments epitomized in ‘See Fernando’ which ‘just feels’ like it fits somewhere in Rilo Kiley’s More Adventurous. Overall Acid Tongue is perhaps the most diverse album Lewis has ever produced (solo or with Rilo Kiley).
