Maria Taylor : Lynn Teeter Flower

Listening to it makes us sway, makes us teeter. Lynn Teeter Flower isn’t only Maria Taylor’s friend’s nickname, it’s also the name she chose for her second solo album, released in 2007 – after 11:11 in 2005 – on the label Saddle Creek. Label that the pretty brunette shares with Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst) – to whom I feel obliged to take my hat off, Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh being one of the most beautiful songs ever. On top of the label, she also shares a lot of her work with Conor, and he put his touch on this new album with great pleasure.

It’s indeed his delicate voice that accompanies Maria’s on the sweet folk Dylan-like chords of The Ballad of Sean Foley that he actually co-wrote. This song isn’t the public’s favourite and yet it shows well what the singer has best: her voice, and doesn’t overload itself with instrumentals flourishes. A wonderful quality we find again with delight on Clean Getaway, an acoustic guitar, Maria’s angelic voice, and introspective fully emotional lyrics, I made my place by the door, I didn’t know what I was waiting for, felt just like home, except no grass, no yard, no pictures, I finally made it, I made a clean getaway.
How not to fall in love with her voice on that last heartrending sentence where she reaches highs trimmed with feelings, and I miss you, I miss you every single day. Small Part of Me gives us that same pleasure mixed with sadness, the gentle brushes on the drums going with the beauty of the voice, followed by clear rhythms to back the guitar on the refrain, and just a small part of me believes this. Well, I believe it. And I also believe in the percus of My Own Fault halting movingly sincere lyrics. Maria opens up and it touches us directly where it hurts. Where my stomach decided to react to the acid of the electric guitar’s keys. Without forgetting the piano in Replay, the lower pitch singing and the title she repeats in a refrain we’d want endless. But because she’s prolific and always in search of new experiences, our Alabama singer refuses to confine herself to one and only style, she keeps trying out and exploring all her musical talents. We knew her as the second half of Azure Ray and member of the band Now It’s Overhead. She sang for inevitable Moby – my hat’s off once again, Maria makes obviously no mistakes.

On this record, it’s with Irish Goodbye that she goes the furthest in the experimentation, even if it means taking risks with this rap passage sung by Rig which is I think a fly in the charming ointment Lynn Teeter Flower is otherwise. But an artist wouldn’t be one without the touching experiences creation drives them to lead. As a proof, the most touching of them lies in the last track of the album, the tender title song Lynn Teeter Flower in which we can hear sweet childish Maria’s voice, as a tribute to the friend whose name she borrowed for this personal and enchanting album.
